FILM-FORUM WORKSHOP

Every Tuesday

from 16.30 - 17.30 PM

Do you want to improve your listening and speaking abilities? Come to Francisco Nieva High School every Tuesday from 16.30 to 17.30 PM and have fun watching films in English and commenting upon cultural and social topics. Watching films of other cultures is an excellent way to practice informal English and to learn about important issues affecting different parts of the world.

These are the films we have watched at school up to now

This is a film about modern American "Parenthood" or even a portrait of a common family with all their ups and downs, a profoundly moving meditation on the human condition. It shows the usual landmarks of a person's life.

This warmhearted story shows children the rewards of perseverance in following their own star despite parental or popular opinion. It demonstrates the importance of love in a family under enormous stress and shows a father coming through as a parent after making some errors. In this film a friendship between two boys survives the fact that one is homosexual and the other probably is not. "Billy Elliot" also illustrates the far reaching influence that a dedicated teacher can have on a child's development.

The theme is unconditional love, the value of family, the frustrations and desires of a dysfunctinal family who are just learning to get along for the first time. The demonstration of loyalty towards one anotherA satire of societal norms and constructions of identity. The real meaning of the concept "winners vs. losers"

How to cope with the reality of disease and death A boy with strong faith and courage as he faces his daily battle against cancer, surrounded by a loving family and community. The film delivers a message of home, faith and courage to face obstacles in everyday life.

It displays the ethical value of forgiveness in personal relationships and the challenge of going out of our way to help others by repaying good deeds done to us by doing good deeds for others. It also acknowledges that people can make a difference in the lives of others being the first step towards a real social change.

The film is about segregation, a society that teaches black people and white people to hate each other, but where they also live side by side. Strict rules, laws, and norms that restrict the lives of black people but they also restrict white people who want to cross the color line.

How to counteract hate and irrationality through acts of love and courage.

In a family full of secrets and lies, the grandfather finds the only people he really gets on with are his own grandchildren, as he respects their natural honesty, he confides to them his hopes and fears and the kids innocently reveal the ins and outs of their family life and many intimate details about their parents. A granddad who teaches his grandchildren the most important things in life: love all the people around you without paying attention to their miseries

The movie is about an international custody battle, a very real problem nowadays. When couples from different countries break up they often each want the children to live with them and grow up in the country (and culture) in which they were raised. Each naturally thinks the way he or she was raised is better for their children.

Interesting for the film's depiction of life, religion and culture in a Muslim country.

Grace is a young supervisor at a foster-care facility for at-risk teenagers. Passionate and tough, Grace is a formidable caretaker of the kids in her charge but Grace’s own difficult past – and the surprising future that suddenly presents itself – throws her into unforeseen confusion, made all the sharper with the arrival of a new intake at the facility: a gifted but troubled teenage girl with whom Grace has a charged connection. A lovingly realized film finds truth and humour in unexpected places.
